Snowmaking for Santa's Arrival

Dec 12, 2023

Snowmaking is Finishing the Middle
Kudos to our team who have been working extra hard the last few days to make as much snow as quickly as possible. No doubt it has been a bit of a struggle bus this year to get Mother Nature to work with us but we've taken advantage of every cold minute we could. Snowmakers were incentivized this week to see who could make the most snow with the longest not tallest whale. Why? The smaller the pile the quicker our groomers can flatten or widen the snow into a skiable surface. Efficiency is the name of the game this year given the rollercoaster of temperatures. By the time Friday rolls around the following trails should be added to the mix: Miracle, Birch, Upper Duskey, Sky High, Lower Duskey, Elk, Slalom, a full Mystery and potentially a few others off the top of Blitzen. The team is already headed East with the goals of spinning Cupid by the weekend of the 23rd.

A Granite Peak Exclusive - Groomer Rides with Santa
Over the years of my career I've signed some big contracts but I don't think any of them top the one I have with Santa and here at Granite Peak! This is an exclusive program that you'll only find here - Groomer Rides with Santa - take place this weekend during our first Family Festival of the season. This is a fantastic experience not only for the little ones but for adults as well. Santa takes the afternoon off to give a 10 minute tour in our Leitwolf Prinoth Snow Groomer! Not only will he listen to Christmas wishes from the boys and girls he'll also show off this amazing machine and all it's cool little buttons. It truly is an experience that provides memories forever. My kids still talk about it and love to do it each season. We still have a few slots available and as you can see by the photos up to four people (two adults / two lap children) can fit into the machine. Sign up here.

Fireworks & Brad Too
This weekend marks the exciting start of our daily operations! 🎉 Beginning Monday, 12/18, we'll be open every day until April, with our lifts joyfully spinning until 9 pm each evening! ⛷️❄️ This signifies the kickoff of our regular operations. The Historic Chalet is set to be open Fridays through Sundays. Plus, after the holidays, we're adding Wednesday nights to the mix for our Wisconsin Wednesdays promotion, starting January 3rd. 🏂✨
And that's not all the fun we have in store! 🎶 This weekend, we're thrilled to welcome back our favorite après-ski musician, Brad Emanuel. 🎸 He'll be treating us to a special Christmas set in the Historic Chalet for some pre-7pm fireworks enjoyment, right out on the slopes in front of the Historic Deck! 🎄💥 Brad will be gracing us with his musical talents every Saturday from 12/30 through April, and stay tuned for a full band performance set in late March! 🕺🎵 Get ready for a season of winter wonder and fantastic tunes! 🌨️🎤

Expectations Leading into Christmas
We all know that the weather has been more mild than we've had in recent years. It's ok. We've had four really strong winters in a row and it will come around but snowmaking temps have not been optimal. Given that I wanted to share our goals for the next upcoming weather patterns. The adjacent graphic indicates what we anticipate to have open starting Friday 12/15 (green), our next snowmaking moves (light blue) and then additional (purple) if possible. This is what we are shooting for by Christmas. Could it be more - absolutely, could it be less, unfortunately yes it could. It all depends on lows and how long those temps will be around for.
By the Christmas Holiday Week our goals are to have 6 of 7 lifts spinning with Cupid, Santa, and Frosty to our count along with approximately 30 -33 trails & 3 terrain parks.

WetBulb & Forecasting Snowmaking
This chart shows the "wetbulb" temperature for our area. This is in partnership with OpenSnow who's midwest meterologist Chroix Christensen has provided us and our sister resorts Lutsen & Snowriver with. As you can see we have a nice window through Thursday morning but then the angry red shows up.
Looking out to Sunday it appears temps get back to snowmaking weather at night but not by much but that's still days away and we'll have to wait to see what next week brings. Keep thinking cold thoughts and with a little luck and Christmas spirit we can get back to that purple & blue dots!

Happy Holidays
Thanks to all who have been out the last few weekends. I truly love this place and the people that make it special from the staff to the guests. Hopefully we can make some turns together this year.
I'll see you out on the slopes.
