Spring Skiing at Granite Peak: March Magic in Wisconsin

Spring Fling

Feb 15, 2025

As winter's grip begins to loosen and the days grow longer, March ushers in one of the most magical times of the year at Granite Peak. Located in Wausau, Wisconsin, this beloved ski resort transforms into a spring skiing paradise, offering unique experiences that make it the perfect destination for both die-hard snow enthusiasts and casual weekend warriors.

Spring Fling

Perfect Spring Conditions

March at Granite Peak brings a special combination of conditions that many skiers and riders consider ideal. The harsh winter temperatures give way to comfortable daytime highs in the 30s and 40s, while nights still dip below freezing – creating that perfect freeze-thaw cycle that produces stellar spring skiing conditions. The snow softens throughout the day, offering forgiving, buttery turns that are perfect for trying new tricks or simply cruising the groomers.

Mardi Gras

Mardi Gras, Moguls & Pond Skimming

Spring brings some of Granite Peak's most anticipated events. From rail jams to family-friendly activities, there's always something happening on the mountain. The terrain parks come alive with riders taking advantage of the softer snow to push their skills. Weekend barbecues and outdoor concerts create a festival-like atmosphere that makes every visit feel special.

We kick things on with our Mardi Gras Family Festival with plenty of beads, food, music and fun!  We end the month with our Spring Fling Family Festival featuring the popular spectator friendly pond skim!

Dasher Open Later for Sunset Turns!

One of the best parts about spring skiing at Granite Peak is the extended daylight hours. Gone are the pitch-black 4 PM sunsets of midwinter, replaced by gorgeous golden hour sessions that stretch well into the evening. Start your day with perfectly groomed corduroy when the lifts open, then watch as the snow transforms throughout the day. The morning hours offer faster, more structured runs, while afternoon brings that classic spring "corn" snow that many riders live for.

Tips for Spring Success

To make the most of your March visits to Granite Peak:
- Layer up: Temperatures can swing dramatically throughout the day
- Start early: Take advantage of the firmer morning snow, especially on warmer days
- Bring sunscreen: The spring sun reflecting off the snow can be intense
- Wax accordingly: Spring conditions often call for warmer temperature waxes
- Stay hydrated: Warmer temperatures mean you'll need more water

So grab your gear, gather your friends, and head to Granite Peak this March. The corn snow is calling, and the spring skiing season awaits with all its sun-soaked, smile-inducing glory.
